Our Sick of SSP campaign aims to address the inadequacies of Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) in the UK. SSP often falls short of providing sufficient income for care workers to cover their basic living expenses during periods of sickness absence.
Our campaign not least highlights the struggles faced by those who rely on SSP, but we are also calling for reforms to SSP, and advocating for an increase in the level of SSP payments and broader eligibility criteria to ensure that all workers have access to adequate sick pay when needed. By raising awareness and lobbying for policy changes, we are determined to improve the financial security and well-being of workers facing illness or injury in the UK.
Nine out of ten care workers cannot afford to take time off sick, and forty per cent would not take time off with covid, despite one in three catching the virus in 2023, our poll of HC-One carers reveals. Meanwhile just one per cent get full company sick pay!
Almost all care workers are forced to rely on Statutory Sick Pay, which only come into effect after three days of sickness and is then just £109 per week. Join us today and stamp out the scourge of SSP in the care sector!
