The campaign to end food poverty aims to address the root causes of food insecurity and ensure that all individuals and families have access to nutritious and affordable food. Food poverty refers to the inability of individuals or households to secure adequate and nutritious meals due to financial constraints and other socio-economic factors.
In our region, ourselves alongside other trade unions, various organizations, community groups, activists, and local government entities are involved in the efforts to tackle food poverty. These initiatives include:
Food banks and food distribution programs, providing food parcels to individuals and families in need. These initiatives rely on donations from individuals, businesses, and community groups to distribute food to those facing food insecurity.
Advocacy and policy work, focusing on legal changes at a local and national level to address the underlying causes of food poverty, such as low wages, inadequate social support systems, and ‘food deserts’ (areas with limited access to affordable and nutritious food).
Education and awareness-raising, communicating with the public about the issue of food poverty and its impacts on individuals, families, and communities. In doing so we help mobilize support for solutions and reduce stigma associated with seeking assistance.
Partnerships and collaborations between government agencies, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and community groups can strengthen efforts to address food poverty by pooling resources, sharing expertise, and coordinating services within our region.
Where possible, we encourage all our members to donate to their local foodbanks. Every contribution, big or small, supports a person or family in need. Together we can eradicate food poverty and ensure that future generations do not suffer as we have under this Tory government.
